Content Expert

Valerie Hon is a practicing school nurse in a semi-rural public school district. She has more than 25 years of experience in school nursing, public health, professional development, and leadership.

Valerie has been a district nurse for Portage Community School District for 15 years. She leads the school nursing and health services program. Valerie is passionate about children with special healthcare needs, student safety while at school, immunizations, and school nurse professional development.

Through her role as a school nurse, Valerie organizes area school nurse meetings and learning activities where school nurses engage with peers and content experts. She recently joined the collaborative of the Department of Public Instruction and School Health Associates in organizing and hosting the Wisconsin School Nurse Networking meetings. This brings school nurses together in a virtual meeting to learn, ponder and share with peers on select topics in a supportive environment.

Valerie is a member of the National Association of School Nurses (NASN), Wisconsin Association of School Nurses (WASN), Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society, Wisconsin Organization of Nurse Leaders, and Wisconsin Nurses Association (WNA). She is a past president, president-elect, and district director of WASN. Valerie received her undergraduate degree in nursing from Edgewood College, a certificate in school nursing from UW-Madison, and is finishing a Master of Science in Nursing degree from UW-Green Bay. She is a DPI licensed and nationally certified school nurse.

Valerie has organized and led many professional development opportunities for school nurses. She has presented as an individual and part of panels.
