0.5 Nursing Continuing Professional Development Contact Hours.

This course is approximately 30 minutes in length.

Course Description:

Many students and staff look forward to a yearly school field trip. These field trips are conducted outside of the structured classroom setting. Teachers and school staff spend a considerable amount of time planning for the field trip, arranging transportation, meals, and entrance fees. School Nurses understand that the planning also needs to include considerations for the health and safety of all students who will be participating in the field trip. Students participating in the field trip who take medications at school or who have underlying health concerns require additional oversight and a more detailed level of planning. This module will review the planning steps the School Nurse should take to improve student safety and health outcomes while on a field trip.

Course Outline:

  • Field Trip Planning
  • Medication Administration
  • Performing Nursing Procedures
  • In-State Field Trips
  • Out-of-State Field Trips
  • International Field Trips

At the end of this module, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe the planning steps that a School Nurse should take to improve student safety and health outcomes while on a field trip
  2. Articulate how other states’ Nurse Practice Acts affect field trip preparation
