Course Description:
Nurses are very familiar with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) but student education records are different from patient health records. In the school setting, nursing documentation and health records are impacted by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, known as FERPA. This module will review FERPA and HIPAA and explore how School Nurses and student education and health records are impacted by these two federal laws.

- The intersection of FERPA and HIPAA in the school setting
At the end of this module, the learner will be able to:
- Recall the main factors of FERPA
- Recall the three primary parts of HIPAA
- State when a school would be considered a HIPAA covered entity
- Describe how HIPAA and FERPA intersect in the school setting
