Course Description:
Many students with chronic illnesses may be eligible for a 504 Plan. The School Nurse is typically very involved in the development of a student’s 504 Plan, but this is one aspect of School Nursing that many nurses did not learn about in nursing school. This module provides the School Nurse with the necessary information regarding 504 Plans to make them an effective member of the 504 team.

Course Description:
The administration of medications in schools can be a complex task given the number of variables that the School Nurse needs to manage, including federal and state laws that impact medication administration, case management and communication with the student’s parents, healthcare provider and school staff, and safe medication storage. Many times, the School Nurse is delegating this task to an Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) which adds to the complexity. This module will review numerous factors that the School Nurse should consider to keep students healthy and safe.

Course Description:
Accurate, timely, and detailed documentation is essential. Documentation is needed to engage in effective communication with the student, parents, healthcare provider, and school staff. In the school setting, School Nurses are not only responsible for the documentation of nursing interventions provided to students; they must also document the education and training provided to Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP). This module reviews the federal laws impacting documentation, types of documentation systems used in schools, and considerations for documentation of staff training and education.

Course Description:
Nurses are very familiar with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) but student education records are different from patient health records. In the school setting, nursing documentation and health records are impacted by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, known as FERPA. This module will review FERPA and HIPAA and explore how School Nurses and student education and health records are impacted by these two federal laws.

Course Description:
Many students and staff look forward to a yearly school field trip. These field trips are conducted outside of the structured classroom setting. Teachers and school staff spend a considerable amount of time planning for the field trip, arranging transportation, meals, and entrance fees. School Nurses understand that the planning also needs to include considerations for the health and safety of all students who will be participating in the field trip. Students participating in the field trip who take medications at school or who have underlying health concerns require additional oversight and a more detailed level of planning. This module will review the planning steps the School Nurse should take to improve student safety and health outcomes while on a field trip.

Course Description:
Delegation is a concept that is challenging no matter how long a School Nurse has been practicing. The decision to delegate is impacted by numerous variables, such as the School Nurse’s State Nurse Practice Act, school district policy, the School Nurse and delegatee’s job description, along with education, training, and experience of not only the delegatee but the School Nurse as well. This module outlines the factors that the School Nurse should consider when deciding whether to delegate. The module also provides case studies to actively engage the learner in their understanding of delegation.

Course Description:
School board policies and procedures provide the framework and processes for how a school district functions. There are times when the School Nurse will be involved in policy development and review, especially policies and procedures related to student health. This module discusses the differences between policy, procedure, and protocol. Additionally, the module discusses the differences between a school district procedure and a nursing procedure. The module also provides numerous ‘real life’ examples of school district policies to assist the School Nurse in understanding how to review their district’s policies and procedures to ensure they are consistent with state laws, other policies within the district and School Nursing best practice.
